Gran Dolina, Archaeological cave in Atapuerca Mountains, Spain

The Gran Dolina cave contains eleven distinct sedimentary layers, extending to a depth of 20 meters within the limestone formation.

Archaeological excavations at Gran Dolina revealed human fossils dating back 800,000 years, marking the earliest evidence of human settlement in Western Europe.

The cave sediments contain stone tools made from flint, quartz, quartzite, sandstone, and limestone, demonstrating early human technological capabilities.

The railway trench construction exposed the cave's interior structure, creating vertical walls that allow researchers to study the different geological layers.

Bone fragments from at least eleven individuals show cut marks indicating evidence of cannibalism, suggesting specific food practices among early humans.
