Castle of Alfàndec

Castle of Alfàndec is a medieval fortification with two walled enclosures, one containing dwellings built from rammed earth. The remains show how the fortress was divided and used as a residential space for the local population.

The fortress was built during Islamic rule and served as a protective center for the valley and as a tax collection point. After Christian conquest, new structures were added, including the chapel with stone vaults.

The chapel inside shows Gothic features with stone vaulted ceilings that were built after Christian conquest. This architecture reflects the cultural shift that took place across the region.

The paths to the fortress were recently restored and provide good access to the site. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and take time to explore the different areas and their layout.

Excavations at the site uncovered Roman coins and coins from the period of King James II. These discoveries suggest the location held importance across multiple historical periods.
