Castelo Ramiro

Castelo Ramiro is a medieval fortress whose remains stand on a hilltop overlooking Ourense and the surrounding landscape. The location provided a strategic command of the territory and clear sightlines across the region.

The fortress was built in the late 12th century by Ourense bishops to secure their religious authority in the region. It stood as a center of their power until its destruction in 1486.

The ruins show how religious authorities displayed their power across Galicia through the structure's placement and design. Its hilltop location made it a visible symbol of their control over the territory below.

The site is accessible year-round and visitors can explore the grounds freely. Little of the original structure remains, so it helps to take time examining the foundation outlines and remaining walls at your own pace.

During the Irmandiña Revolt in 1467, citizens destroyed the fortress as an act of resistance against the oppressive control exercised by the bishops. This demolition was a rare example of ordinary people standing against religious authority during that period.
