Well of Moses, Medieval monument in Champmol, France

The Well of Moses features life-sized sculptures of six prophets and angels carved in limestone on a hexagonal base near a four-meter-deep well.

Between 1395 and 1403, Dutch sculptor Claus Sluter created this monument for the Carthusian monastery of Chartreuse de Champmol under Duke Philip the Bold.

Each prophet figure on the hexagonal base, including Moses, David, Jeremiah, Zachariah, Daniel, and Isaiah, represents biblical predictions of Christ's crucifixion.

Visitors can observe the monument at the Hospital de la Chartreuse, while the remaining fragments of the original crucifixion scene are displayed at Dijon's Archaeological Museum.

The prophet Jeremiah's sculpture bears the facial features of Duke Philip the Bold, incorporating Burgundian colors in its original painted design.

Saône-et-Loire reveals a heritage that is not just scenery. The heights of Morvan still bear the traces of Bibracte, an ancient oppidum where Gallic history was written. Autun recalls Roman power with one of the country's largest ancient theaters. Further south, fortified villages, Romanesque abbeys, and castles add a medieval and Renaissance layer to this mosaic. Le Creusot tells of the entry into the industrial age. Between ancient stones, wooded landscapes, and religious sites, the region gathers locations that highlight the depth of its history.
