Lake Varaždin, body of water
Lake Varaždin is a reservoir on the Drava River between Međimurje and Varaždin County in northern Croatia. The water stretches out in wide, gentle curves along the river's path, with natural banks and occasional pebble beaches or rocky areas for sitting and swimming.
The reservoir was built in the early 1980s to supply water for a hydroelectric power plant and generate electricity. Since its completion, it has become a popular destination for locals and visitors to enjoy the outdoors.
The lake is easy to explore with well-maintained paths along the embankment stretching about 20 to 25 kilometers, suitable for walking or biking. The main parking area is located below the bridge over the Drava River, though it tends to get crowded on weekends and holidays.
The water level of the lake changes depending on hydroelectric power production, so the width and appearance of the reservoir shifts regularly. Visitors can download GPS tracks from online platforms like Strava to plan their routes and enjoy a safer outdoor experience.
