Church of St. George, Serbian Orthodox church in Varaždin, Croatia
The Church of St. George stands in the main marketplace of Varaždin, featuring Neo-Byzantine architecture with Neo-Romanesque elements designed by Žigo Baločanski in 1884.
The establishment of this Orthodox church followed the 1781 Patent of Toleration issued by Joseph II, marking increased religious acceptance in Croatian urban areas.
The interior contains transferred Biedermeier furnishings from Zagreb's Orthodox church, including an iconostasis, choir stalls, pews, window panes, and a chandelier.
The church operates under the Archdiocese of the Metropolitanate of Zagreb and Ljubljana, providing regular services for the Serbian Orthodox community in northern Croatia.
Emperor Franz Joseph I directly supported the construction of this church, while local officials Ognjeslav Utješenović Ostrožinski and Milan Vrabčević facilitated its establishment.
