Međimurje County Museum

The Međimurje County Museum occupies the inner palace of Čakovec Castle and displays collections spanning archaeology, folk traditions, and regional history across its interconnected rooms. The exhibitions fill multiple levels of this medieval fortress and document how people lived in this area.

The museum was established in 1954 and later relocated to the palace interior of the castle fortress. Over time, it expanded its collections to show the region's development from ancient times through the modern era.

The museum reflects the craftsmanship and folk traditions that shaped life in the Međimurje region, visible through everyday objects and artworks displayed throughout the castle rooms. These collections show how local people worked, dressed, and celebrated across different periods.

The museum is centrally located in Čakovec and easily accessible on foot. Visitors should allow several hours to see the exhibitions spread across different castle levels without feeling rushed.

The inner courtyard of the castle displays stone monuments and carved fragments from different periods outdoors in a lapidarium setting. Walking through this collection in the open air offers a different experience from the indoor galleries above.
