Akeldama, Historic site in eastern Jerusalem, Israel
The Akeldama complex features ancient burial caves, stone tombs, and a Greek Orthodox monastery built on terraced slopes overlooking the Hinnom Valley.
The site gained its name, meaning Field of Blood in Aramaic, after Judas Iscariot purchased it with the silver coins he received for betraying Jesus.
Multiple Christian denominations recognize this location as a sacred burial ground where pilgrims and travelers found their final resting place throughout centuries.
The monastery grounds open for visitors during morning hours, with guided tours available through the Jerusalem Tourism Office and local religious organizations.
During the Middle Ages, ships transported soil from Akeldama to the Camposanto cemetery in Pisa, Italy, believing it possessed miraculous decomposition properties.
