Igatpuri, Hill station in Nashik District, India
Igatpuri is a settlement in the Nashik district of Maharashtra located in the Western Ghats at about 600 meters (1,970 feet) elevation. The surroundings show forested slopes, deep valleys, and seasonal waterfalls along the Bhatsa River valley.
The settlement grew during British colonial times as a junction for trade routes between Mumbai and northern India. The railway line was built in the 19th century and made the area more accessible for travelers and goods transport.
The name comes from a local word for the hilly terrain that shapes this area. Locals visit the temples early in the morning and use the waterfalls after the rainy season for bathing and picnics.
The area is greenest during the monsoon between June and September, when waterfalls flow most strongly. The railway station connects the settlement with Mumbai and other cities in Maharashtra via the Central Railway line.
The Dhammagiri meditation center sits on a hill outside the settlement and offers multi-day courses in Vipassana techniques. The facility is surrounded by forests and participants spend their time in silence and regular practice.
