Kollur Mine, Diamond mine in Guntur District, India
The Kollur Mine is a series of gravel and clay pits spread along the southern bank of the Krishna River in Andhra Pradesh. The work areas lie scattered across flat alluvial terrain where laborers once sifted through the riverbed for stones.
The mine supplied large quantities of diamonds to rulers and merchants across Asia from the 16th to the 18th century. Its operation ended gradually in the 19th century as accessible deposits became depleted.
The extraction work drew traders and craftsmen from many regions who formed a busy settlement together. Residents worked in groups and sold their finds at local markets where distinct trading customs took shape.
The location sits beneath a reservoir and remains inaccessible most of the year. Visits are possible only during rare low-water phases when parts of the old extraction areas emerge briefly.
Many famous gemstones including the Koh-i-Noor and the Hope Diamond originated from these pits. The royal administration claimed all stones over 10 carats for itself while smaller finds went to the workers.
