Guttikonda Bilam, Natural limestone cave in Piduguralla Mandal, Palnadu District, India
Guttikonda Bilam is a natural limestone cave in Piduguralla Mandal, Palnadu District, containing multiple interconnected chambers. The passages display stalactites and stalagmites that developed over thousands of years as mineral-laden water dripped and deposited layers of stone.
Archaeological excavations uncovered evidence of human occupation from prehistoric times, including ancient artifacts and a sword holder inside the cave. These discoveries suggest the location served as shelter and possibly held religious or ceremonial significance for ancient inhabitants.
Several temples dedicated to local deities stand near the cave entrance, showing the spiritual importance this place holds for the community. Visitors can observe how these shrines blend into the landscape and reflect the religious practices of the region.
Visitors can reach the cave by shared auto from Guttikonda village bus stop, followed by a short walk on an unpaved trail. Proper footwear and a flashlight are advisable since the interior passages are dark and damp.
In 2008, researchers discovered a new species of tiny crustacean within the cave, named after the scientist who found it. This microscopic creature lives only in the humid conditions found deep inside the cave system.
