Prakasam Barrage, Irrigation barrage in Andhra Pradesh, India
Prakasam Barrage is an irrigation structure across the Krishna River in Andhra Pradesh, India, regulating water flow through a series of gates. The structure spans the full river width and connects both banks with a roadway running along the top of the construction.
The structure was completed in the late nineteen fifties to secure agricultural water supply across several districts and control flooding. The naming honored a regional politician who had advocated for infrastructure development.
The nearby riverfront promenade becomes a social gathering spot in the evenings, where locals stroll and watch the sunset over the water. Street vendors sell traditional snacks and drinks there, while families enjoy the fresh breeze.
The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon, when the light is softer and there is less traffic. The viewing areas are easily accessible and offer direct views of the gates and the river.
When water levels are high, several gates are opened simultaneously, creating an impressive sight of cascading water that attracts many onlookers. The road atop the dam simultaneously serves as an important connection route between both riverbank towns and is used daily by thousands of vehicles.
