Mogalrajapuram caves

Mogalrajapuram is a cave temple complex with five rock-cut sanctuaries in Vijayawada. The largest temple, Cave II, features rectangular chambers supported by four stone pillars that create a spacious central hall.

The caves were created during the Eastern Chalukya period in the 7th century. They demonstrate the architectural advancement from earlier temple structures in the region and reflect the technical mastery of the era.

The caves house important Hindu statues, including representations of Nataraja and Vinayaka along with an early Ardhanareeshwara idol from South India. These sculptures reflect the religious diversity and artistic skill of the craftspeople who created them.

The site is located about 2 kilometers from Vijayawada Railway Station and can be reached by auto-rickshaw, taxi, or local bus. The best time to visit is early morning when it is cooler and less crowded.

The cave walls display an overhanging cornice with artificial windows that allow light to reach the dark interior chambers. This design choice reveals the ancient stoneworkers' knowledge of lighting and ventilation.
