Mayani Bird Sanctuary, Bird sanctuary in Vaduj Forest Range, Satara District, India.
Mayani Bird Sanctuary is a protected area in the Vaduj Forest Range of Satara District that covers approximately 8.67 square kilometers spread across six villages. The reserve contains a lake and wetland areas that support water birds and native plants, along with observation towers and visitor facilities.
The sanctuary received its official protected status in March 2021 through notification from the Maharashtra State Forest Department. This designation followed efforts to safeguard the wetland ecosystem and its wildlife inhabitants in the forest region.
The Sangameshwara temple dedicated to Lord Shiva marks the convergence of two water streams and remains an important pilgrimage site for local worshippers. Religious ceremonies blend with the natural landscape, creating a space where spiritual practices and wildlife coexist.
Observation towers and park facilities provide good access for bird watching, with lodging available on-site for visitors who want to stay longer. The best visiting season is from November through January when bird populations are at their highest.
More than 400 bird species inhabit the area, including Siberian flamingos that feed on insects and small fish in shallow waters. This remarkable diversity makes it an important refuge for migratory birds traveling from distant regions.
