Moulivakkam, human settlement in India
Moulivakkam is a residential neighborhood in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, situated along Arcot Road and part of the Mangadu municipality. The area is made up of housing, small shops, and open land, with a large technology park nearby that hosts offices of several major software companies.
Moulivakkam began as a small settlement on the outskirts of Chennai and grew gradually as families moved out from the city center. The opening of the DLF Special Economic Zone in 2010 marked a turning point, bringing large-scale construction and new residents to the area.
Moulivakkam is also known locally as Bai Kadai, a name that means 'marketplace' in the regional language. Small shops and street vendors along the main roads still give the area this market-like character that locals rely on for everyday needs.
Arcot Road connects the neighborhood directly to central Chennai, and the Outer Ring Road makes it easy to reach other parts of the city without going through the center. The nearest train station and the international airport are both reachable within a short drive.
In 2014, a multi-story building under construction in the area collapsed, killing 55 people. The ruins were brought down in a controlled demolition in 2016, and the event sparked a wider debate about construction safety across the region.
