Orco Valley, Alpine valley in Piedmont, Italy
Orco Valley is an Alpine valley in the Graian Alps that extends from Pont Canavese to Nivolet Pass, featuring steep rock faces and green meadows across its length. The valley contains several villages and mountain lakes at varying elevations, from lower settlements to high Alpine passes.
The valley takes its name from the Orco River, which has flowed through the region for centuries and shaped the landscape through its passage. Major changes came in the 20th century with the construction of hydroelectric dams, particularly a large facility at Lake Ceresole.
The northern section of the valley contains part of Gran Paradiso National Park, which protects the Alpine landscape and supports traditional mountain communities whose way of life has remained largely unchanged over time.
The best time to visit is from late May to early October when snow recedes and mountain routes become accessible. Several starting points like Ceresole Reale, Locana, and Sparone offer access to different hiking trails and rock climbing areas.
The valley is shaped by several major summits including Gran Paradiso and Torre del Gran San Pietro, which together create distinctive landmark peaks for mountaineers exploring the region. Many visitors overlook these summits even though they form the backbone of the valley's geography.
