People Mover in Venice, Cable liner transportation system in Piazzale Roma, Italy
The People Mover in Venice is an automated cable-powered rail system linking Piazzale Roma, the Marittima cruise port, and Tronchetto parking island via overhead tracks. The trains run continuously during operating hours, moving passengers across approximately 870 meters in roughly three minutes per journey.
The system opened in 2010 as the fifth of its kind built worldwide. It was created to address Venice's growing transportation needs between the mainland and the city's outlying islands.
The system represents how modern transit fits into Venice's world of water and walking, where new technology coexists with centuries-old patterns of movement. Passengers experience this blend of contemporary engineering alongside the city's historic character.
The system operates daily from 6 AM to 11 PM, with each train holding around 200 passengers. It accommodates luggage and bicycles easily, making it practical for travelers arriving with heavier bags.
The trains run on a narrow-gauge track measuring 1.22 meters, which allowed for a compact design squeezed into Venice's tight spaces between water and existing structures. This specialized gauge keeps the system minimal without sacrificing passenger comfort.
