Monte Subasio

Monte Subasio is a mountain in the Apennines featuring pink limestone formations that rise above the gentle landscape of Umbria. The mountain extends across several ridges with forested slopes and open pastures on its higher sections.

The mountain became connected to the foundation of the Franciscan order when Saint Francis of Assisi lived in this region during the early 1200s. The spiritual community that grew around him transformed the entire landscape into a place of religious importance.

The pink limestone of this mountain shaped the buildings in Assisi and neighboring villages for centuries. You see this warm stone tone everywhere in the town walls and houses that define the local character.

Wild orchids bloom across the slopes from April to June, thriving in soil that has never been treated with pesticides or chemical sprays. These flowering plants are found nowhere else in such abundance in the surrounding regions.
