Basiluzzo, Small island in Aeolian archipelago, Italy
Basiluzzo is a small island in the Aeolian archipelago off Sicily with steep cliffs rising above the sea and a flat plateau at its center. The island spans less than half a square kilometer and sits about 3.5 kilometers southwest of Panarea.
The island was called Hicesia in ancient times and served as a settlement where people grew grapes and capers for centuries. This agricultural use shaped its role in the region from antiquity through modern times.
The island belongs to the maritime heritage of the Aeolian chain and has appeared in Italian cinema productions. It remains connected to the region's seafaring traditions and cultural memory through these appearances in film.
The island is reachable only by boat from Panarea, and there are no buildings or permanent facilities on it. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and be cautious on the steep slopes.
Stone walls and foundations from old farms remain visible on the central plateau, showing traces of past farming. These structures help visitors understand how people once lived and worked on the island.
