Arena del Sole, National heritage theater in Via Indipendenza, Bologna, Italy
Arena del Sole is a neoclassical theater on Via Indipendenza, one of the main streets in central Bologna, with an inscription on the facade that recalls its original purpose. The building holds two separate halls: a large one for around 900 people and a smaller one for roughly 180.
Work on the building started in 1800 on the site of a former Dominican convent, and the theater opened in 1810. Over the following decades it became a regular part of city life and was later recognized as part of Italian national heritage.
The name translates roughly as "Sun Arena" and recalls the days when performances took place in the open air under daylight. Today the building is fully enclosed, but the name still points to that original open character.
The theater sits directly on Via Indipendenza, which is easy to walk along and served by several bus lines. Checking the program in advance is a good idea since the schedule changes throughout the year.
In its early decades the theater was only open from Easter through September, because the open-air layout made cold-weather performances impossible. This kind of seasonal schedule was common for outdoor entertainment in Bologna at the time.
