Ponte Sant'Angelo, Roman bridge in central Rome, Italy.
The Sant'Angelo Bridge spans the Tiber River with five stone arches, connecting the historic center of Rome with the district of Borgo.
Emperor Hadrian commissioned architect Decriannus to build this bridge in 134 AD as an access route to his mausoleum, now known as Castel Sant'Angelo.
Ten marble angel statues designed following Bernini's plans stand along the bridge's parapets, each holding different symbols of Christ's Passion.
The bridge serves as a pedestrian crossing point between central Rome and Vatican City, providing direct access to major landmarks and museums.
During the 1450 Jubilee, the bridge's balustrades collapsed under the weight of numerous pilgrims, resulting in many casualties and leading to significant structural modifications.
