Monte Gelbison, Mountain peak in Cilento region, Province of Salerno, Italy.
Monte Gelbison is a mountain in the Cilento area of the Province of Salerno, in southern Italy, reaching about 1,705 meters (5,600 feet). Its slopes carry Mediterranean scrub at lower levels and mountain forest higher up, and a sanctuary stands at the very top.
The name comes from Arabic and dates to the medieval period when Saracen groups were present in the region, meaning roughly Mount of the Idol. Before that, the site held an ancient Oenotrian place of worship, showing the peak carried religious meaning long before the Middle Ages.
The sanctuary at the top is a pilgrimage site where people from nearby villages come to honor the Madonna del Monte Sacro. The lit cross visible from the valleys at night is a familiar landmark for those who live in the surrounding communities.
Marked trails reach the summit from several starting points, including Novi Velia and Vallo della Lucania, and the routes vary in length and steepness. Sturdy footwear and enough water are important to carry, as some sections are steep and there are no supply points along the way.
A meteorological station sits near the summit alongside the sanctuary, collecting weather data for the surrounding region. This means the peak serves both as a pilgrimage destination and as an active scientific observation point.
