Santa Maria della Carità, Naples

Santa Maria della Carità is a Baroque church on Piazza Carità in Naples, adorned with elaborate decorations, marble elements, and detailed religious artworks throughout its interior. The spaces showcase the craftsmanship and artistic detail typical of churches built during this period.

Founded in 1550 during a plague outbreak, the church was established to serve as a spiritual refuge for the faithful. In 1627, it became affiliated with the Pii Operai Catechisti Rurali organization, which redirected its pastoral mission.

The church earned its nickname 'la Giorgia' in 1823 when the Congregation of the Rosary took over its care and reopened it. This name reflects the particular devotion and community that gathered here.

The church sits centrally on Piazza Carità and is easy to reach on foot within the city. Keep in mind this is an active place of worship, so appropriate dress and respectful behavior are expected.

A devastating fire in 1960 destroyed numerous artistic treasures, including paintings and architectural elements that dated back several centuries. This loss permanently altered the interior and makes the surviving works all the more meaningful to visitors today.
