Necropolis of Montessu, Archaeological park in Villaperuccio, Italy.
The Necropolis of Montessu is an archaeological park in Villaperuccio with around 40 rock-carved tombs arranged symmetrically along a trachytic rock wall. The graves sit on the southern slopes of Sa Pranedda hill and contain carved details inside.
The site was in use from the Late Neolithic period around 3200 BC until the Early Bronze Age around 1600 BC, passing through different cultural phases. Over this long span, burial practices gradually changed, showing how the society evolved.
The tomb chambers display carved patterns like spirals and horn symbols that show how ancient Sardinian communities honored their dead. These designs meant something deeper than decoration for the people who used these graves.
The site can be visited most days, with opening hours varying by season. It helps to check the exact times before you go and wear suitable clothing for walking around the ruins.
Two menhirs stand near the necropolis, including the Luxia Arrabiosa monolith reaching around 5 meters tall. The top of this stone bears marks from lightning strikes that remain visible today.
