Toblacher See, Alpine lake in Trentino-South Tyrol, Italy
Toblacher See is an alpine lake in South Tyrol situated at 1259 meters elevation between the Sesto Dolomites and the Fanes-Sennes-Braies nature reserve. The water body covers roughly 14.3 hectares with a shoreline featuring several coves and shallow zones suitable for different activities.
The lake was strategically fortified in the 1930s with the construction of five military bunkers as part of the Alpine Wall defensive system. These fortifications remain visible in the landscape today as remnants of that period.
The lake serves as a crucial stopover for migratory birds during spring and autumn, making it a favored destination for birdwatchers and nature photographers. Local communities have long valued this place for its connection to the natural cycles of the region.
A 4.5-kilometer walking trail circles the entire shoreline with educational signs about local plants and wildlife. Summer visitors can rent boats to explore the water or simply enjoy the peaceful surroundings from the shore.
During winter months the water freezes over completely, creating a natural platform where locals and visitors skate and play curling. This seasonal transformation offers a completely different way to experience and move through the landscape.
