Castello degli Orsini

The Castello degli Orsini is a castle in Morlupo built around a square courtyard with a covered portico on one side and access to the main staircase. The building features symmetrically arranged rooms and two entrances: one facing Piazza Giovanni XXIII and another facing the village.

The medieval fortress was destroyed in 1433, after which the Orsini family rebuilt and transformed it into a Renaissance residence. This shift changed the structure from a purely defensive stronghold into a noble dwelling.

The entrance displays heraldic symbols representing both the Orsini family and the Morlupo community, with a lion and a wolf with rooster carved into the stone. These emblems reflect the connection between the noble residents and the local population they ruled.

The castle sits directly beside Piazza Giovanni XXIII in the village center and is easily accessible on foot. Its two entrances allow flexible routes through the settlement.

From its watchtower, the castle could observe and control the important Roman roads of Flaminia and Tiberina. This strategic position made it a key surveillance point for the region.
