Comelico, Mountain region in northern Veneto, Italy
Comelico is a mountain region in the Province of Belluno, Veneto, made up of five municipalities spread across valleys close to the Austrian border. Dense forests, alpine meadows, and ridges divide the territory into connected pockets of settled land at different elevations.
Archaeological finds show that people settled in this mountain area long before recorded history. In the 15th century the territory became part of the Venetian Republic's mainland, a shift that shaped local life for generations.
Ladin, a Romance language spoken by a small mountain community, is still heard in daily life across the villages of Comelico. Local festivals and religious ceremonies keep these traditions visible and accessible to visitors passing through.
The five municipalities are connected by roads that follow the natural lines of the valleys, making movement between them straightforward in good conditions. Mountain roads can become difficult in bad weather, so checking conditions before traveling between villages is always a good idea.
Although Comelico shares the Ladin language and many traditions with nearby Ladin valleys, it falls outside the officially recognized Ladin provinces and belongs administratively to Belluno. This in-between position gives the area a character that does not fit neatly into any single regional identity.
