Palazzo Muti Papazzurri

Palazzo Muti Papazzurri, Baroque palace in Piazza della Pilotta, Rome, Italy

Palazzo Muti Papazzurri is a Baroque building on Piazza della Pilotta in Rome featuring a grand courtyard accessed through a central triumphal arch. Two wings connect across the open space via a Baroque architectural screen that frames the interior.

The building was constructed in 1660 by Mattia de Rossi, a student of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, for a prominent Roman family. During the 18th century, exiled members of a European royal house also rented and occupied parts of the complex.

The palace displays frescoes depicting classical myths that adorn the interior courtyard walls, created by Baroque-period artists. These artworks show how wealthy Roman families decorated their homes with stories from ancient times.

The building today houses a research institute with an extensive library serving academic purposes. Visitors can typically access the courtyard area, though the interior rooms remain reserved for institutional use.

The building retains original Baroque frescoes by two important artists of that era who worked within Rome's most renowned artistic circles. This collaborative artistry demonstrates the high caliber of decoration that wealthy families could commission.
