Orto Botanico dell'Università di Catania, Botanical garden of University of Catania, Italy.
The Orto Botanico dell'Università di Catania is a garden in central Catania spanning 16 hectares with over 2,000 succulent species and some 50 palm varieties. The plants grow under Mediterranean conditions, making use of the natural environment.
A Benedictine monk named Francesco Tornabene founded this garden in 1858 as part of the University's scientific research. The succulent collection he started was later expanded significantly, particularly in 1963.
The garden features a section dedicated to plants found only in Sicily, reflecting the island's natural heritage. Walking through these areas lets you see species that shape the local landscape and environment.
The main entrance is located at 397 Etnea Street in the city center. Guided tours are available for individual visitors and educational groups, and you can plan your visit time accordingly.
The collection includes plants from the Cactaceae, Euphorbiaceae, and Aizoaceae families, gathered from different parts of the world. This diverse range shows how different succulents can thrive under similar conditions.
