Sant'Agata al Borgo

Sant'Agata al Borgo is a baroque church on the northern side of Piazza Cavour, featuring a single nave with early 18th-century decorations. The interior walls are adorned with frescoes by Giovanni Lo Coco, which fill the space with artistic detail.

The church was founded in 1669 to serve people displaced by an eruption of Mount Etna. After the devastating earthquake of 1693, the building was reconstructed in 1709 in baroque style.

The apse displays frescoes depicting scenes from Saint Agatha's life, showing the deep bond between this church and the city's patron saint. The images tell of how much local people revere this saint.

The church remains an active place of worship with several side altars dedicated to different saints. Visitors should remember that this is a functioning religious space and approach it respectfully.

A plaque on the facade records a procession in which the veil of Saint Agatha was carried following the 1908 earthquake in Messina. This relic demonstrates the far-reaching spiritual importance of this saint beyond the city.
