Parco Gioeni, Urban park in Catania, Italy.
Parco Gioeni is an urban park at the northern end of Via Etnea in Catania that spans a large area with Mediterranean plants growing on volcanic soil. The grounds include walking paths, children's play areas, benches for resting, and a separate space where dogs can exercise.
Plans for a park at this site emerged in the 1930s, but construction only began decades later in the 1970s. Multiple funding phases from the Sicily region eventually made the project possible.
The park hosts various cultural events throughout the year that draw local artists and visitors from the city. These gatherings give the space an active role in how the community gathers and celebrates together.
You can enter through the Via del Bosco gate, and the grounds are easy to navigate with clear paths and plenty of space to explore. Arriving early is wise to enjoy the best conditions before heat and crowds, especially on sunny days.
Beneath the park's green surface runs the remains of an ancient Roman aqueduct built from Mount Etna's lava stone. An archaeological trail system guides visitors past some of these hidden traces of the past.
