Madonna dell'Olmo Sanctuary

The Madonna dell'Olmo Sanctuary is a religious building with neoclassical design topped by an octagonal dome, sitting high above La Spezia on Mount Santa Croce. Inside, a central baroque altar holds a venerated painting that has drawn pilgrims for generations.

Construction of the sanctuary began in 1839 after local leaders decided to build a larger church to accommodate growing numbers of pilgrims. The building on this elevated location reflected the community's commitment to establishing a prominent place of worship.

The sanctuary hosts an annual celebration on the second Sunday of May, featuring processions with wooden figures representing characters from the sacred painting. This gathering draws believers who participate in the local religious customs of the region.

The sanctuary sits 280 meters (920 feet) above sea level, offering views down to the Gulf of La Spezia and the surrounding mountain ranges. Visitors should expect an uphill climb to reach it, with the best lighting and visibility in early morning or late afternoon.

The sanctuary's name comes from an elm tree that once stood in the church square, giving the place its distinctive identity. The original painting had a different name before becoming linked to this location, showing how local traditions evolved over time.
