Rocca Malatestiana

Rocca Malatestiana is a fortress in Fano with a multi-sided defensive layout designed to protect the city during the Renaissance. The thick walls, towers, and moat surrounding the structure show the strategic planning that went into its construction.

The fortress was built in the 14th century under Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta and formed part of the city's northern defensive perimeter. It evolved over time as military needs changed and new threats emerged in the region.

The fortress reflects the lasting influence of the Malatesta family, who shaped this region for centuries through military and political power. You can sense their dominance walking through the structure and seeing how it commands views over the city.

The fortress is easily accessible and provides views over the city from different vantage points along the walls. Wear sturdy footwear since the ancient stone surfaces can be uneven and slippery in places.

The Mastio tower carries visible damage from German forces in 1944 when they retreated from the city. Its enormous stone base remains as a testament to those violent final war years.
