Santa Maria del Gonfalone

Santa Maria del Gonfalone is a church in the historic center of Fano built with a brick facade and white stone base. The building features a limestone portal topped by a curved pediment and a wide window above it.

A confraternity began construction of this church in the early 1600s on the site of an older building previously called Santa Maria della Carità. The new structure was built to serve as a meeting place for the wealthy families who formed this brotherhood.

The wooden ceiling created in 1606 showcases octagonal sections decorated by craftsman Matteo Carloni from a nearby town, with a painted disk at its center showing Santa Maria della Carità. These painted panels remain visible today and show the care invested in the interior by the wealthy families who commissioned the work.

This church is located on Via Rinalducci and now operates as a cinema and theater venue. You can visit it to see how the interior has been adapted for these cultural uses.

The confraternity that built this church was made up of wealthy Fano families who provided care for elderly women and children in need. This kind of charitable work by private groups was common in Italian cities of that era.
