Biblioteca Federiciana, Conservation library and museum in Fano, Italy
The Biblioteca Federiciana is a conservation library and museum holding more than 250,000 volumes displayed across several rooms of a former priests' residence. Its collections include specialized manuscript and film departments, plus a periodicals section with many current subscriptions.
The library was founded in 1681 when an abbot donated his private collection to the Filippini Fathers housed at an oratory near San Pietro in Valle church. Over the centuries, it grew through donations and acquisitions into one of the region's major libraries.
The library preserves an important collection of local writings and religious texts that shaped Fano's intellectual life over centuries. Visitors can browse historical volumes, understand how early modern scholars worked, and see how knowledge was gathered and passed down in this region.
The specialized manuscript and film departments keep limited hours, so plan ahead by checking the current schedule before your visit. The building sits behind San Pietro in Valle church and is easy to find once you know the exact location.
Inside are two handcrafted globe maps from 1688 made by a Venetian cartographer that remain on display as original furnishings. These rare objects show how people understood world geography during the Renaissance period.
