Ducal Castle of Ruffo, Medieval castle in Bagnara Calabra, Italy
Ducal Castle of Ruffo is a medieval fortress in Bagnara Calabra built with tuff blocks and lava stone, featuring a brick exterior with double pointed arch windows and stone supports. The structure combines different materials reflecting construction methods common to the region.
Roger II of Sicily ordered this fortress built in the 12th century to control the coastal area. The 1783 earthquake caused severe damage and the reconstruction work that followed gave it a new appearance.
The castle now hosts art exhibitions and cultural events that draw visitors from the region. It stands as a working symbol of how medieval structures continue to shape community life in this part of southern Italy.
The fortress sits on elevated ground approximately 60 meters high and is accessed via the Ponte di Caravilla, a historic arched stone bridge. Comfortable footwear is recommended since the path leading up to the entrance includes some steep sections.
The fortress was equipped with twelve bronze cannons named after the Apostles, which reinforced its defensive walls. These guns reveal how important this coastal stronghold was for maritime control.
