Maria Santissima del Carmelo

Maria Santissima del Carmelo is a baroque shrine located in the historic center of Palmi, facing Carmine Square. The interior features a main nave with a curved apse, decorated with baroque elements and multiple side altars displaying religious artworks.

The shrine was established in 1540 as a dedication to Our Lady of Loreto under Provincial Master Angiolo Emiliano before becoming a Carmelite church. Following successive earthquakes over the centuries, it underwent multiple reconstructions and reached its present form in 1930.

The shrine serves as the center for two major annual celebrations: July 16 honors Our Lady of Mount Carmel, while November 16 commemorates a significant 1894 event. These observances shape the religious life of the city and draw devoted visitors from surrounding areas.

The shrine is easily found in the heart of the old town by following local streets. The square in front offers space to rest and observe daily life, allowing visitors to linger and take in the surroundings comfortably.

The shrine received recognition as a diocesan sanctuary in 1994, marking its status as a spiritual center for the region. This official designation reflects how the community viewed this place as important for its faithful.
