Monte Sant'Elia, Mountain peak in Palmi, Italy
Monte Sant'Elia is a mountain peak located along the Calabrian coast near Palmi, rising roughly 580 meters above sea level. The summit offers panoramic views stretching across the Tyrrhenian Sea toward Sicily and occasionally visible to Mount Etna on the horizon.
The mountain has served as a navigation landmark for seafarers since ancient times, helping guide vessels traveling along the Tyrrhenian coast. Its prominent position made it a valuable reference point for maritime traffic in the Mediterranean.
Local residents maintain numerous walking paths across Monte Sant'Elia, preserving traditional routes that connect different parts of the Calabrian community.
The mountain can be reached via a hiking trail of approximately 9 kilometers starting from the SS18 road. Parking is available near the trailhead, making it convenient to begin the ascent on foot.
On clear days, visitors can simultaneously see two remarkable natural features from this summit: the Tyrrhenian Sea spreading below and the distant Mount Etna on the horizon. This rare dual view of both water and volcano makes the vista particularly rewarding.
