Santissimo Crocifisso

Santissimo Crocifisso is a Romanesque Revival church in Palmi featuring a single rectangular nave with side altars crafted by Calabrian artisans. The roof is defined by a curved pediment adorned with Corinthian pilasters.

Construction of the church began in 1537 under Friar Antonio on the remains of an earlier church dedicated to Santa Maria de Caravellis. Over the centuries, the structure underwent multiple transformations that shaped its present appearance.

The church serves as the diocesan shrine of Oppido Mamertina-Palmi and houses a wooden crucifix from the 17th century listed in Italy's Art Objects Inventory. Visitors can observe this carved religious object displayed within the interior layout.

The religious complex underwent multiple restorations, with the most recent renovation completed in 2019 to preserve its architectural elements. Visitors can expect well-maintained interior spaces and accessible areas to explore.

Each May, the religious site becomes the center of the Festa del Santissimo Crocifisso, featuring a procession carrying a wooden representation about 240 centimeters tall. This annual celebration reveals the deep local devotion to the place.
