Basilica Maria Santissima dei Poveri

The Basilica Maria Santissima dei Poveri stands with Romanesque Revival architecture features, designed by architect Carmelo Umberto Angiolini between 1922 and 1933.

The original church, first documented in 1325, was destroyed by the 1783 earthquake and rebuilt, then damaged again in 1908, leading to the construction of the current building.

The basilica maintains the tradition of the Madonna dei Poveri procession through the city streets every August 14, connecting generations of local faithful.

Located at coordinates 38.3362 N and 15.871 E, the basilica opens its doors to visitors and pilgrims throughout the year on Corso Barlam.

The church transformed from Parish of Santa Maria degli Arangi to Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Immacolata Concezione through a papal bull in 1659.
