Badia di San Pietro, Romanesque abbey on Mount Conero, Sirolo, Italy
Badia di San Pietro is a Romanesque abbey set on Mount Conero with a three-naved basilica structure and thick stone walls. The building features rounded arches and ornamental stone elements typical of the Romanesque style.
The earliest written records of the abbey date to 1038, when the Conti Cortesi family brought Benedictine monks to establish a monastic community. A major renovation took place in 1223, when the underground crypt was rebuilt.
The carved stone capitals inside show skilled medieval craftsmanship from local artisans of the region. Visitors can notice these decorative details throughout the pillars and arches as they walk through the spaces.
The building sits at 450 meters in elevation and now functions as part of a hotel, though it remains accessible for visits. It serves as a good starting point for hiking and offers access to trails across Mount Conero.
Beneath the church lies a crypt with stone columns and pillars that remain from the 11th century, even though the crypt was later rebuilt. These underground chambers preserve the earliest building elements and reveal the oldest phase of the monastery.
