Osaka Prefecture University, Public university in Sakai, Japan
Osaka Prefecture University is a public institution in Sakai, Osaka Prefecture, that operates across several locations. The main campus in Nakamozu lies south of central Sakai and holds faculty buildings, libraries, and research facilities across an extended site.
This institution formed in 2005 by merging three schools: the original Osaka Prefecture University, Osaka Women's University, and Osaka Prefecture College of Nursing. Its roots reach back to 1883, when the predecessor was founded as an agricultural school.
The campus grounds include several Kofun burial mounds dating from the 3rd to 7th centuries, positioned between lecture halls and research buildings. Students and visitors can see these ancient earthworks directly on site, where they have become part of the everyday environment.
Most areas of the campus are open to the public, though some research buildings and labs remain accessible only to staff and students. Visitors can explore the open grounds, libraries, and burial mounds on site, with main areas clearly marked.
The university operates its own research vessel, the Hakuhomaru, available to students and researchers for marine studies. This ship allows fieldwork in coastal waters and open seas around Japan.
