Kogakuin University, Private engineering university in Shinjuku, Japan
Kogakuin University is a private engineering school in Shinjuku, Tokyo, occupying a 29-story tower in the city center as its main campus. The second campus in Hachioji spreads across extensive outdoor grounds with research facilities.
The school began in 1887 as Koshu Gakko, Japan's first private engineering institution during the country's industrial transformation. It received its current name and university status later as part of the reorganization of Japanese education.
The name Kogakuin translates directly as Institute of Engineering Studies, reflecting its technical focus from the very beginning. Students work in specialized laboratories developed together with partners from Japanese industry.
Underground passages connect the main campus to several JR rail lines and make access easier during bad weather. The Hachioji campus is reachable by train and bus from central Tokyo in about one hour.
One of the skyscrapers in Shinjuku houses lecture halls, libraries and laboratories on vertical floors instead of the usual horizontal campus layout. Students shift between urban classrooms and rural research facilities depending on their year of study.
