The town of Nanbu was formed through administrative mergers in 1955, followed by another consolidation with Tomizawa in March 2003.

The Central Japan Railway Company operates the Minobu Line through Nanbu, connecting residents to major transportation routes including National Routes 52 and 469.
Located at the southernmost point of Yamanashi Prefecture, Nanbu maintains the lowest elevation of any municipality in the region at 150 meters.
