Holy Resurrection Cathedral, Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Chiyoda, Japan
Holy Resurrection Cathedral is an Eastern Orthodox place of worship in the Surugadai neighborhood of Chiyoda, Japan. Red bricks form the outer walls, above which rises a central dome that gives shape and color to the surrounding residential blocks.
Construction finished in 1891 under the watch of a Russian cleric who lived in Japan for decades. The 1923 earthquake damaged the structure, after which a rebuilding effort in the late 1920s secured the site.
The church carries the nickname Nikolai-Do, named after the missionary who founded the Orthodox community in Japan. Inside, icons hang on the walls while worshippers light candles and pause before the images.
Ochanomizu Station sits a short walk away and makes the journey from central areas straightforward. Doors open in the afternoon, with slightly earlier closing in winter than in summer.
Japanese craftsmen shaped metalwork and created brick patterns that married Russian designs with local techniques. The bells still ring today and carry a sound uncommon in this part of Tokyo.
