Kumanoshi Station, railway station in Kumano, Mie Prefecture, Japan
Kumanoshi Station is a small railway stop in the city of Kumano on the southern Kii Peninsula. The simple facility has a side platform and an island platform serving three tracks, connected by a footbridge.
The station opened in 1940 originally as Kii-Kinomoto Station as part of the Japanese Government Railways network. It received its current name in 1959 and came under JR Central management in 1987 following the privatization of Japanese railways.
The station takes its name from the city of Kumano, which has a long tradition of pilgrimage. The simple design reflects the quiet, nature-connected way of life in this region.
The station has a small ticket office called Midori no Madoguchi where staff sell tickets and answer questions. A nearby bus terminal provides connections to places not served by rail.
The original name Kii-Kinomoto refers to the old designations of the area and its connection to the forests and mountains that define the local landscape. This historical name reminds visitors of the deep connection between the station and the natural environment of the Kii Peninsula.
