Okutoro, Natural canyon in Kitayama, Japan.
Okutoro is a canyon within Yoshino-Kumano National Park that runs along the Kitayama River, shaped by steep rock walls and enormous boulders scattered throughout. The water has carved dramatically through the landscape, creating passages between stone formations of varying colors and textures.
The river served as a key transportation route during Japan's timber logging era, when workers guided logs downstream using traditional rafting methods. This activity shaped the region's economy and local development for generations.
The canyon forms part of the Kumano pilgrimage network, connecting to sacred sites and ancient pathways that received UNESCO World Heritage status in 2004.
The best way to experience this canyon is by boat tour, available from March through November, which provides different viewing angles of the rock formations and river landscape. Visitors should prepare for uneven terrain and changeable mountain weather conditions.
Jabara citrus trees grow along the banks, a rare variety found almost nowhere else in the country. These small fruits contain less acid than common citrus, making them sought after in local cuisine.
