Hyūgashi Station, railway station in Hyuga, Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan
Hyūgashi Station is a small railway stop in the city of Hyūga in Miyazaki Prefecture, defined by a distinctive building constructed primarily from Japanese cedar wood. The structure features a central platform serving two tracks, with a staffed ticket office and wheelchair accessibility that serves both local residents and passing travelers.
The station originally opened on October 11, 1921, as Tomitaka Station and was renamed Hyūgashi Station in 1963. The current building was completed in 2008 and notably became the first Japanese railway station to win the international Brunel Award for architecture in that same year.
The station's name derives from its location in Hyūga, with "ashi" referring to the edge or boundary of the city. The cedar wood construction reflects local appreciation for natural materials and craftsmanship, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that represents the community's connection to this modest transit hub.
The station is approximately 10 minutes by car from Hyūga IC and offers a central location for exploring the city. Visitors can easily board trains, and the infrastructure is user-friendly with clear signage and comfortable waiting areas on the platform.
In 2024, the station was temporarily renamed Hinatazaka46 Station to celebrate a concert by the pop group Hinatazaka46. This unusual renaming for a few days demonstrated how the venue became part of local celebrations and cultural happenings.
