Japan National Route 339, National highway in Tsugaru Peninsula, Japan
Japan National Route 339 is a national highway spanning approximately 125 kilometers through western Aomori Prefecture. It connects Hirosaki city to the coastal town of Sotogahama, threading through the Tsugaru Peninsula.
The route received its official designation as a national highway in 1975 from the Japanese government. It incorporated pre-existing roads that had already connected Hirosaki with the northern coastal region.
The road connects numerous traditional fishing communities along the Tsugaru Peninsula, providing access to local markets and cultural centers throughout Aomori Prefecture.
Winter snow closures affect sections near Cape Tappi, requiring drivers to seek alternative routes through the region during this season. Planning ahead for changing conditions is essential when traveling in the colder months.
At Cape Tappi, a special section features a 388-meter pedestrian staircase with 362 steps that is accessible only on foot. This section represents the only portion of a Japanese national highway that remains closed to vehicles.
