Mount Kinka, Mountain and castle complex in Gifu, Japan.

Mount Kinka is a 329-meter-high mountain rising above Gifu City, featuring varied terrain with forests and rock formations throughout its slopes. The mountain is primarily composed of chert and covered by dense laurel woodland that changes color across the seasons.

The mountain was formerly called Mount Inaba and was inhabited during the sixth century Kofun Period, as evidenced by several circular burial mounds found there. During the Sengoku period, Gifu Castle was built on its summit and became instrumental in Japan's unification efforts.

The mountain holds Gifu Castle at its summit, a landmark that has served as a symbol of the city for centuries. Today, visitors experience the connection between the natural slopes and this historic structure that overlooks the urban landscape below.

The mountain can be accessed via four different hiking trails or by cable car, offering a quick way to reach the summit. The hike is physically demanding with varying times depending on the chosen path, so visitors should plan accordingly.

The mountain is home to a squirrel village where visitors can interact with Taiwanese squirrels in a natural setting. This unusual attraction was established in 1965 and offers an uncommon experience with the tame animals year-round.
